A Brief History of LCHope
Lutheran Church of Hope (LCHope), part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), was established as a mission congregation of the American Lutheran Church in Broomfield, Colorado in 1963. Pastor John Northwall was the founding pastor. The first service was held on September 15, 1963 at Kohl Elementary School until December 1, when services were moved to our current location in the space now known as the LCHope Chapel of the Crosses. The church was chartered and officially organized on February 2, 1964 and it became self-supporting and debt-free in 1972.
In 1976-77, the congregation doubled the size of its Fellowship Hall, and added a nursery, classroom space, library and office space. Again with growth in 1988, the congregation moved to renovate existing space as well as build our current worship space, which was dedicated in 1991.
In 1994, LCHope sent both people and financial support to help start our daughter church in Broomfield, Cross of Christ Lutheran, which continues to grow and thrive in East Broomfield. In 2002, Cross of Christ had a pivotal role in starting Rejoice Lutheran just north of Broomfield in Erie. How exciting it is to celebrate having both a daughter and grand-daughter congregation!
In 2009, following a year and a half of careful discernment, prayer, and conversation, LCHope passed unanimously a Strategic Plan for Ministry, which guides the congregation in its vision and mission for ministry for the next 5-10 years. As part of that strategic plan, ministry needs and goals have driven a total renovation of the entire LCHope campus, including the addition of a new Fellowship Hall that seats more than 200 people. Phase 1 construction, dubbed ‘Renewing Hope’ was completed in the spring of 2012. As part of Renewing Hope, the congregation gave away 10% of its campaign gifts (over $70,000) to organizations outside of LCHope including Flatirons Habitat for Humanity, Broomfield FRIENDS, and Lutheran Family Services Rocky Mountains.
Since 2009, LCHope has experienced stable growth in its ministries both outside and inside its walls. In the spring of 2023, the congregation began an ambitious capital camapign entitled ‘Building Hope for the Future’ to raise capital funds and faith that will be used to build a new house of worship and prayer for all people, narthex/lobby/gathering space, and office complex, as LCHope continues to be a vibrant community of faith in the 21st century. We plan to break ground sometime in 2024!
